How We Do This Online

As best I can, I try to make this as close to a regular class as possible. Homework assignments and exams are similar to what I do for a face to face class. The only thing substantially different, of course, is lack of real-time interaction. I have videoed lectures for this course as a substitute. You are always welcome to send in math questions, or any questions for that matter.

The textbook is fairly unique for this kind of statistics course where we give you a college level introduction to the concepts of statistics and de-emphasize number crunching of data. It’s a little quirky in ways, but not nearly as hard to read as an algebra textbook. I encourage you to read the textbook as much as you can; it discusses many good examples.

My videos summarize the major points of the textbook and present examples with a lot of talk and explanation.

I created this course at SSCC in 1998 at the request of the bachelor degree nursing program at Wright State University and I have taught it many times. Because it is designed for people who need to read and understand publications with statistical data and references, there is an emphasis on interpreting results that you calculate or have been calculated for you. Expect to do some writing.

Also expect to do some calculating with fairly complicated formulas. Make sure you can get the same reults on your calculator as I do in the videos. If you have trouble with this, let me know.

Each week I will suggest what chapter(s) to study and when it makes sense, assign homework problems to turn in. Studying is basically watching my videos and reading the book as much as possible.

I communicate via e-mail, so please check your e-mail almost every day for updates and information.
